Metabolic

Glucose (Fasting)

Fasting glucose measures the level of sugar (glucose) in your blood after an overnight fast. It is one of the primary tests used to screen for and monitor diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Cardiovascular

Total Cholesterol

Total cholesterol measures the combined amount of HDL, LDL, and VLDL cholesterol in your blood. It provides an overview of your lipid status but should be interpreted alongside individual components for a complete cardiovascular risk picture.

Hematology

Hemoglobin

A hemoglobin test measures the amount of hemoglobin protein in your blood. Hemoglobin is found inside red blood cells and is responsible for binding oxygen in the lungs and delivering it throughout your body.

Fertility

b-hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)

Beta-hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) is the hormone produced by an implanting pregnancy. This blood test measures the beta chain of that hormone and returns an exact number in U/L rather than a yes-or-no answer. In serum, hCG becomes detectable roughly eight to eleven days after conception, a few days earlier than most home urine tests pick it up. Outside pregnancy hCG has a second role: it is used as a tumour marker in trophoblastic disease and in germ cell tumours, in women and in men alike. A single value tells you little. Meaning almost always comes from the trend across two measurements and from ultrasound, interpreted by your doctor.

Thyroid

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

TSH is thyroid-stimulating hormone. The pituitary gland makes it, and uses it to drive your thyroid. At the laboratory that runs the test the usual adult range runs from 0.27 to 4.20 mE/L. A high TSH usually fits an underactive thyroid. A low value usually fits an overactive one. That direction feels inverted, and it is. TSH is the pituitary signal, not the thyroid hormone itself. Laboratories use slightly different limits from one another. Always read the reference value printed on your own result. And a single measurement is never a diagnosis.

Minerals

Ferritin

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, so your ferritin level shows how large your iron reserve is. Serum iron only measures how much iron is circulating in your blood at that moment; ferritin describes the reserve behind it. That reserve empties before your haemoglobin falls, so a low ferritin can already cause symptoms while your blood count still looks normal. Ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection and liver strain, which is why it can only be read properly alongside a CRP. Commonly used reference values are 30 to 400 µg/l for men and 15 to 150 µg/l for women, but your own laboratory report is what counts.

Metabolic

HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. It is the gold standard for long-term blood sugar monitoring and diabetes management.

Hormones

Total Testosterone

Total testosterone measures the combined amount of bound and free testosterone in the blood. As the primary androgen, testosterone may influence muscle mass, bone density, libido, mood, and energy levels in both men and women.

Hormones

Estradiol (E2)

According to the NVKC, the Dutch society of clinical chemists, oestradiol is the main female sex hormone and belongs to the oestrogens. It is made mainly in the ovaries, in the maturing egg cells (follicles), and together with progesterone it develops and matures the lining of the womb in every menstrual cycle, so that a fertilised egg can implant. According to the NVKC, oestradiol is also needed for healthy and strong bones, in women and in men. According to the NVKC, a low oestradiol occurs among other things in women during and after menopause, with severe underweight and with early failure of the ovaries; a raised oestradiol among other things in pregnancy, with hormone treatment for IVF and with obesity. Only a blood test shows how much oestradiol is in the blood. Star-SHL uses 45.4 to 854 pmol/l for women in the follicular phase and 41.4 to 159 pmol/l for men; Certe counts the follicular phase as day 1 to 12 of the cycle.

Vitamins

Vitamin D (25-OH)

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Its main job is the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the gut. That makes it decisive for bone metabolism. The skin produces it under the influence of sunlight. Food and supplements supply a smaller share.
