PFOA Test
A PFOA blood test measures the level of perfluorooctanoic acid in your blood. PFOA is a "forever chemical" that does not break down easily in the environment or the body, and elevated levels may be associated with thyroid disruption, liver changes, and immune effects.
Turnaround up to 72 hours, estimate Turnaround: up to 72 hours after your blood draw (estimate).
Reference Ranges
No established reference range
There is no "normal value" for PFOA in blood, and that is not an omission but the heart of the problem: RIVM finds that "in almost everyone the amount of PFAS is higher than the health-based limit". A normal range would therefore call you normal at precisely the point where the limit is already exceeded. RIVM also states that with current knowledge it "cannot yet be predicted whether someone will develop health problems in the future" from a PFAS blood value. We therefore attach no "normal" or "raised" label to your result. Discuss it with your doctor.
Reference values can vary between laboratories. Discuss your results with your GP for explanation and treatment decisions.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): what this test measures
This test measures the concentration of PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) in your blood. PFOA belongs to the PFAS family of chemicals, commonly used in non-stick cookware, water-resistant clothing, food packaging, and firefighting foams.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): why this value matters
PFOA persists in the body for years and has been the subject of extensive research. Elevated levels may be associated with thyroid hormone disruption, liver enzyme changes, immune system effects, and other health concerns. Understanding your PFOA levels can help inform decisions about reducing further exposure.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): how the blood test works
- Referral
- No GP referral needed. After the order we arrange the referral through ZorgDomein, within one business day; orders after 17:00 or at the weekend start on the next business day. ZorgDomein emails a barcode, and that barcode is what the draw site needs.
- The draw
- A blood draw from a vein in the arm, at a partner laboratory's draw site. No home kit, no finger prick.
- Results
- Turnaround: up to 72 hours after your blood draw (estimate).
- Where
- 650+ draw sites run by independent laboratories across the Netherlands. Draw sites
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): when is testing worthwhile?
Testing may be recommended if you live near industrial sites that use PFAS, drink water from contaminated sources, or have occupational exposure. Consult a healthcare professional for interpretation of results.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): symptoms of a high or low value
Low Levels
Low levels of PFOA are generally not a cause for concern and may indicate minimal exposure to PFAS chemicals.
High Levels
Thyroid hormone disruption, elevated liver enzymes, immune system changes, cholesterol changes.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): lifestyle and this value
Avoid non-stick cookware that may contain PFAS and opt for stainless steel or cast iron alternatives. Use a water filter certified to remove PFAS. Be cautious with grease-resistant food packaging and water-resistant consumer products.
PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid): frequently asked questions
What are "forever chemicals"?
PFAS, including PFOA, are called "forever chemicals" because they do not break down naturally in the environment. They can persist in water, soil, and the human body for many years, making exposure a long-term concern.
How does PFOA enter the body?
PFOA can enter the body through contaminated drinking water, food packaged in PFAS-containing materials, dust from treated products, and occupational exposure. It accumulates in the blood and organs over time.
Can PFOA be removed from the body?
PFOA has a long half-life in the human body, estimated at several years. While the body slowly eliminates it, reducing exposure is the most effective strategy. Consult a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
